Sun, Dragons & One Bathroom: My Honest Review of Universal's Helios Grand Hotel

Welcome to the very first review on the blog! I figured if I'm going to kick things off, I should do it with something worth talking about — and oh, do I have thoughts. My family of five just spent a few days at the brand-new Universal Helios Grand Hotel at Epic Universe, and I'm giving you the full, unfiltered download: the good, the great, and the "stunning property, but here's what they're not telling you."

The Room: Dreams, Dragons & a One-Bathroom Situation
We stayed in the How to Train Your Dragon–themed kid's suite with a park view, and let me tell you, the kids (mine are 14, 17, and 19, so "kids" is generous, but go with me) were absolutely delighted.
The suite is designed for families who actually need space and privacy, and it genuinely delivers on that front.
There's a master bedroom for the grown-ups, a dedicated kid's room, and a living room in between, each with its own TV.
The living room also has a queen-sized pull-out sofa, so no one's fighting over real estate.
Everyone had their own corner of the world.
There's also a microwave and mini fridge, which, as any theme park veteran knows, is a true luxury when you've got three teens who think they're starving every forty-five minutes.
Now. The bathroom. Singular. One bathroom for five people.
Mornings were a diplomatic negotiation that would impress the United Nations.
If you're a family of more than three who values a leisurely morning routine, just know that going in. You will need a system.

We did not have a system.
The Location: The Golden Ticket (With One Catch)
Here's where this hotel genuinely shines: it's located inside Epic Universe, right at the end of Celestial Park.
That means when your feet are screaming at 2 PM, or a Florida afternoon storm rolls in out of nowhere, you just walk back to your room.
No shuttle, no waiting, no drama. You're there.
For families with kids of any age, that kind of escape hatch is priceless. Rest, regroup, rehydrate, and head back out.
It is, without question, the single biggest perk of this property.
The catch, and it's worth knowing, is that this proximity works in one direction.
You are beautifully positioned inside Epic Universe and somewhat isolated from everything else: the other parks, CityWalk, the sister hotels.
There is a complimentary shuttle that runs frequently and it's perfectly fine, but it does add a step.
If your vacation is Epic Universe–focused, you won't feel it at all. If you're a park-hopper who wants to bounce around all day, factor in that extra leg.
One more thing, park view friends: the park announces itself at 8 AM. Every morning.
A welcome announcement, enthusiastic and loud, that lasts about a minute. Charming? Somewhat. An alarm clock you didn't ask for? Also yes. Light sleepers, take note.

Flora Taverna: Gorgeous Room, Solid Food... Ish
The hotel's main restaurant is Flora Taverna, and the design alone is worth a visit.
Bougainvillea cascading from the ceiling, olive trees, that effortless Mediterranean light-and-airy atmosphere that makes you feel like you should be somewhere on the Amalfi Coast rather than Orlando. It's genuinely beautiful.
If only the food matched the room. For dinner we tried the Roma tomato bucatini and a pureed lentil soup, and both landed a little flat.
The bucatini is not something I'd order again, the lentil soup surprised me by being pureed instead of chunky, and honestly the throughline on everything we tried was the same: underseasoned.
A Greek restaurant should have flavor that hits you, and this one just didn't get there.
Dinner was a miss for us. Breakfast, however, was a different story.
The buffet was lovely, the food was actually good, and it set us up perfectly for a full day in the park.
For a theme park hotel breakfast, it cleared the bar and then some.
Bar Helios: Cocktails in the Sky
Up on the rooftop, Bar Helios is a vibe.
The views of Epic Universe are genuinely stunning, especially as the evening light shifts and the park starts to glow.
My husband settled into a classic Old Fashioned and was very happy about it.
I went straight for the champagne, because some decisions are easy.
We shared the Farmer's Cheese plate since we just wanted something light, but honestly the rest of the menu looked so good it was hard to stop there. Small plates, tapas, gyros. Next time we're coming hungrier.
Speaking of the view, you can see the 9 PM closing fountain show from both Bar Helios and your room.
It's pretty! It's pleasant! Is it a reason to stay in the park until 9 PM on tired legs?
In my honest, professional opinion: no.
Enjoy it from your balcony with a glass of something cold and congratulate yourself on your excellent decision-making.

The Verdict: Would We Go Back?
We had a wonderful trip, and this hotel made Epic Universe easier in all the ways that matter.
The suite gave everyone breathing room (except in the bathroom, again, one bathroom), the location is unbeatable for Epic Universe immersion, and the overall experience is polished and thoughtful.
That said? We probably won't return until Helios Grand Hotel joins Universal's other Premier Hotels in including Express Passes with the stay.
Right now it's categorized as a Signature Collection property, which means you're paying a premium for the location and the theming but leaving the Express Pass benefit on the table.
Once that changes, I'll be back on the phone with you all faster than you can say "Hiccup would have wanted this."
