Gelato, Volcanoes, a Private Yacht, and Truffle Dogs: Our Disney Magic Mediterranean Cruise Was Everything

I'll just say it: this is one of our favorite vacations of all time. And I do not use that phrase lightly. We have traveled a lot. We have high standards. We are not easily wowed. But this seven-night Disney Magic cruise, roundtrip from Rome, hit differently from start to finish, and I want to tell you every single detail because you deserve to know what is possible when a trip just works.

My husband and I sailed with our three kids, 15, 13, and 10 at the time, on a Mediterranean itinerary that stopped in Sicily, Mykonos, Santorini, Athens, and Capri before returning to Rome.

What followed was a collection of experiences so good that we are still talking about them.

So buckle up.

Rome: gelato and a golf cart through the city

We embarked and disembarked from Rome, which meant we got to bookend the trip with one of the greatest cities in the world.

At the start of the trip we kept it simple and perfect: gelato and a golf cart tour of the city.

If you have not done a golf cart tour of Rome, add it to the list immediately.

It is the best way to cover a lot of ground without the kind of walking that leaves everyone grumpy by 2pm.

The kids were into it, the gelato was excellent, and we boarded the ship in the best possible mood.

We will come back to Rome at the end of the trip, because what happened there was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Sicily: an erupting volcano and a vineyard with a view

Let me paint you a picture.

You are standing at a safe distance from Mount Etna.

It is erupting.

Actually erupting, lava and smoke and all of it, right there in front of you.

Your children are absolutely losing their minds in the best possible way.

You are all trying to take photos while also just standing there with your mouths open because nothing prepares you for what an active volcano actually looks like up close.

We took a private tour of Etna, and it was extraordinary.

The kind of thing that does not feel real while it is happening.

And because this is our family and we believe in balancing geological drama with excellent wine, we followed it up with a visit to a vineyard on the slopes of the volcano.

The views were stunning in a way that felt almost unfair given that we had also just watched a volcano erupt that same morning.

The wine was wonderful. Everyone was very happy.

Sicily set a high bar for the rest of the trip. It cleared it easily.

Mykonos: a private yacht, a seaside lunch, and bowl after bowl of pasta

We rented a private yacht for the day through Nostros Mykonos, and the yacht was called Para Voce.

I want to remember that name forever.

The crew was incredible, attentive and warm and genuinely invested in making sure our day was perfect.

We spent the day on a (very cold, beautifully clear) Mediterranean that sparkled in a way that made the whole thing feel like a movie.

The crew went above and beyond in the way that only the best people do: they found us a wonderful seaside restaurant for lunch.

We sat there, all five of us, eating bowl after bowl of the most delicious pasta, with the water right there, the sun on our faces, the kind of lunch that you replay in your memory for years afterward.

I highly recommend Nostros Mykonos without any reservation whatsoever.

Book them. Thank me later.

Santorini: ATVs and dining with the locals

An ATV tour of Santorini was exactly as fun as it sounds.

We tore around the island, saw views that belong on postcards, and generally had the kind of raucous family adventure that reminds you why you travel with your kids in the first place.

Afterwards we found a local cafe, sat down, and just ate.

Not a tourist spot. A real local place, with real local people, and food that tasted like someone actually cared about it.

That combination of adrenaline followed by a slow, authentic meal is my ideal vacation formula, and Santorini delivered it perfectly.

Palo, fireworks at sea, and the teenagers who ditched us

One of the best things about a Disney cruise with older kids is Palo, the adults-only Italian restaurant onboard.

My husband and I had a spectacular dinner there, truly one of those meals where you keep ordering because everything is too good to stop.

We may have slightly overdone it.

We definitely overdid it.

We waddled out just in time for the fireworks at sea, which Disney puts on right there in the middle of the ocean, and which are as magical and ridiculous and wonderful as they sound.

Where were the kids during all of this?

They had, without a second glance, abandoned us for Edge and Vibe.

For the uninitiated: Edge is Disney's onboard club for tweens ages 11 to 14, and Vibe is the teen-only lounge for ages 14 to 17.

Think gaming, karaoke, dance parties, and an entire social scene completely separate from their parents.

Our 15-year-old was in Vibe.

Our 13-year-old split time between both.

They made friends on day one and we barely saw them for the rest of the cruise, which honestly?

Is the sign of a great kids program. They were happy. We were happy. Everyone won.

Athens: a scavenger hunt around the Acropolis

I found a tour operator who runs a scavenger hunt around the Acropolis, and this was one of the best decisions I made on the entire trip.

Our guide had the most amazing stories, deep knowledge, genuine passion for Greek history, and the ability to quiz our kids on what they knew and make them feel brilliant for knowing it.

Getting three kids to be genuinely engaged at one of the most important historical sites in the world is no small feat.

She pulled it off completely. If you are going to Athens with children, please do not just walk around the Acropolis on your own.

Find this kind of experience.

It changes everything.

Capri and Anacapri: the Blue Grotto and the views that demand a return visit

Spectacular. There is no other word for the Blue Grotto.

We floated into that cave on a small boat and every single one of us went silent.

The water glows an impossible electric blue from the light that filters in through an underwater opening, and the whole experience lasts only a few minutes, and those few minutes are completely unforgettable.

Anacapri, up on the higher part of the island, gave us some of the most stunning views of the entire trip.

And that is saying something on a trip that included an erupting volcano and the Greek islands.

My husabnd and I agreed on the spot: we need to come back to Capri.

We barely scratched the surface, and what we saw was already extraordinary.

Back in Rome: the Vatican, the Colosseum, and the truffle hunt that changed everything

We returned to Rome with a day and a half to spare, and we used every minute of it.

We visited the Vatican, where I mailed a postcard from inside Vatican City because it has its own post office and I am that kind of person.

We saw the Colosseum.

We did Rome properly.

And then we rode the train out to the Roman countryside for a truffle hunt, and it became one of the most memorable experiences of our entire family travel history.

The dogs go out first.

They find the truffles.

"Cifo", in particular, was extraordinary.

He found so many that the rest of the dogs seemed almost embarrassed.

We followed along through the countryside, watching these incredible animals do what they were born to do, and it was joyful in a way that is hard to put into words.

The kids were completely captivated.

But here is the part that elevated it from wonderful to unforgettable: our hosts cooked a full meal using the truffles we had found.

Right there, in the countryside, a long table, wine, and course after course of food that tasted like the earth it came from.

All of us around the table, full and happy and a little disbelieving that this was real life.

That meal is in our family's greatest hits forever.

The verdict

I recommend all of it.

Every single piece of this trip.

Eat at Palo. Watch the fireworks from the deck of a ship in the middle of the Mediterranean and try not to cry.
